An incomplete, probably Roman, cast, lead alloy, fair size, plain, narrow, conical shaped steel yard weight. Sub circular base with rusty remnants of a suspension loop at the apex. The base seems to have been broken away by agricultural machinery or possibly frost damage exposing an irregular powdery pale grey/white lightly corroded surface. The rest of the surface consists of a slightly irregular matt rusty brown colour - possibly indicating the wet ground conditions of the field which is close to a river. This is likely to be dated to 43AD-410AD as it is associated with a number of other Roman coins and artefacts. Ref. Detector Finds, Gordon Bailey, Greenlight Publishing 1992, page 52-57 No. 16-17, Detector Finds 2, Gordon Bailey, Greenlight Publishing 1993, page 29-34 No. 2, 5 & 14 and Celtic and Roman Finds, Nigel Mills, Greenlight Publishing 2000, page 123-126 No. RB383. The weight has a truncated length 57.90mm, truncated width 43.64mm, truncated thickness 37.63mm, truncated diameter 43.64mm and weighs 353g.
