Medieval (13thto 14thcenturies) harness fitting: The copper alloy fitting has a lozenge shaped plaque which has an integral arm protruding from the lower corner. This arm has a wide, elongated trapezoidal block which has an off-set, narrowed circular sectioned arm. The terminal is squared-off and not broken. The trapezoidal block has traces of gilding on the four side faces.
The lozenge plaque is decorated on both faces. One face has a flower which is composed six petals radiating around a circle. The petals and central circle are all flat and gilded, the field around the petals is filled with red enamel.
The other plaque face is decorated with a grotesque or 'gryllus hooded', it has a veiled woman's head on a lions body. The field surrounding the grotesque has blue enamel. The grotesque has traces of gilding.
The fitting measures 74.53mm long, 26.35mm wide and weighs 20.57g.
Griffiths (1989) illustrates a similar fitting, Figure 12, and suggests the object slotted into a spherical fitting of a multiple pendant set. It probably dates to the 13thto 14thcenturies.
