Iron Age strap fitting consisting of three linked 'petal bosses' each containing an annular setting surrounded by a deep groove. In the centre of each setting is a ring of what appears to white champlevé enamel surrounding a circular setting containing pale green glass. Between the petal bosses is a 'muzzle' motif which expands from a 'plump' to a 'slender' form. Beneath the muzzle is a rectangular plate one edge of which is grooved. The face of this plate bears three circular marks which may have contained dark green enamel inlay. On the underside of the mount is a single, integrally cast, rectangular loop. The undersides of the thee petal bosses are hollow as is that of the rectangular plate. While the face of the mount is carefully finished tooling marks survive on its back. Width While no direct parallel has been found for this fine object its form and decorative elements combine to suggest a late Iron Age/Early Roman date (cf. MacGregor, 1976, Nos. 19-26) c. 200BC to AD200. Width 62.1mm, Length 57.3mm, Mass 54.1g
