MOUNT

Unique ID: KENT-EDAAD8

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A gilt copper-alloy mount of likely medieval date.

Description: The mount consists of a bar with wide circular end through which a rivet for the mounts attachment, possible to a belt or similar. There are two large circular suspension loops which take up the majority of the bars length. All parts of the objects have rounded edges, possibly due to bevelling. The object is light brown with mottled with sparse green areas. Some small patches of gilding remain particularly around the rivet areas.

Measurements: 36mm long, 9mm wide, 5mm thick and 2g in weight.

Discussion: The object doesn't fit any known group of object types but was clearly designed to attach to an object and suspend or attach something to it. Dating comes from a similar objects described by Allan (1984, 346; no. 232) from Exeter, but with three half loops and Rees et al. (1998 266-267, fig. 147, no. 1812) From WInchester. The Exeter example is from a context dating to c. 1200-1250 and the winchester example from a context dated 12th-13th century. See SUR-59FC62 for similar recorded on the PAS.
