A medieval (c. 1250-1400) copper-alloy lozenge shaped horse harness pendant with enamel design in relief. This pendant has a lozenge shaped body with a length of 32.8mm, width of 29.4mm and thickness of 3.7mm. From the top corner of the pendant, set at 90 degrees to the lozenge, an incomplete suspension loop protrudes. The incomplete length of the pendant suspension shank is c.4.4mm. Weight is 13.2g.
The enamel design on the front surface of the pendant consists of some form of animal (crouching cat) in white, facing left, standing on four legs with a long tail above a horizontal white line. Above the animals back are two broken white lines. The background appears to be green enamel showing some pitting revealing a dark brown base. The reverse is plain with a dark green enamel and some pitting, showing a dark brown base.
Steve Ashley illustrates two similar designs in his armorial catalogue of horse harness examples 152-153 (page 16-17). These are described as a three branched tree surmounted by a lion couchant guardant argent (p51-52). Other examples have been recorded of this design on the PAS database incluing a pendant from Wembdon, Somerset (SOM-A5D03E), another from Fincham, Norfolk (NMS-D32110) and a harness hook Nantwich, Cheshire (HESH-4B1357)
