Cylindrical colourless glass vessel, probably an small jar or phial, possibly late Post Medieval. The vessel has suffered heat damage and has collapsed into a flat piece with an irregular surface and flattened end. It is also broken in two with a modern break. At the break it is clear the original open centre is now entirely fused and simply indicated by clouded glass. The base appears to have been circular or oval, the sides were vertical or slightly concave in the centre with no constiction to the mouth with has a folded over rim on the outerside. The glass is colourless and thick but the exact thickness is hard to estimate as it is fused and distorted and varies between 2.8 and 0.9mm at the break.. The piece is now (with modern break refitted) 29.1mm by 14.8mm at the base, 30.5mm by 4.9mm at the top and 77.3mm tall; it weighs 27.28 grams.
The form is similar to that of cylindrical jars as it lacks the out turned rim of a phail. These are usually made in potash glass until c. AD 1700 suggesting this post dates that period (Willmott 2002:90-91,97). Roman ungulent jars usually have a constriction for the neck and a sheared or in rolled rim, very different from this piece (Cool and Price 1995:171-178).
