Copper alloy sleeve clasp. Cast rectangular plate with the stubs of a rectangular eye on one long side and the stubs of three attachment loops on the opposite edge, Hines Form B12. The loops were drilled through U-shaped tabs which project from plain zones of the main plate; there is crudely scored horizontal grooves occupy two intervening panels. This type of clasp has been found at locations widely scattered across eastern England. Though derived from Scandinavian prototypes they are of exclusively English distribution, implying an insular continuation of a costume which entailed tight-fitting sleeved garments for women which were fastened at the wrist by hook and eye elements sewn to the open cuffs. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600.
