It is cylindrical. It measures 94mm in diameter and weighs c.3000g. The size suggests that it was intended to be fired from a demi-culverin, a medium cannon in use during the late 16th and 17th century. During the First English Civil War, the manor house at Barton Blount, where this cannon ball was discovered, was garrisoned by Parliamentarian soldiers and a skirmish was fought nearby with Royalist soldiers from Tutbury Castle. It is therefore quite likely that this dates to 1644-1646.2016-11-16 11:48:292018-07-17 17:56:44312016-09-131Certain113636PAS582C478D0019518141DENOIron11019CastCompletePOST MEDIEVALPMx41047p0gjgrs6sgxPOST MEDIEVALPMx41047p0gjgrs6sgxMetal detectorCircaCirca81448713688135411354041423SK2234SK2234SK23SW52.90299142-1.67436871101591908DENOC478D9.jpg3310205Post-medieval cannon ballDerby Museums Trust4images/awillis/East MidlandsCultivated landEuropean RegionCountyDerbyshireDistrictSouth DerbyshireCivil Parish52.9119-1.69104Barton BlountReturned to finder95173
