Roman Polden Hill type brooch of flat wing ends type, (ADc. 80-120). The copper alloy brooch has wings which are semi-cylindrical, and terminate with perforated wing caps, both of which are incomplete. The wings are undecorated. At the upper edge of the wings and head there is an integral incomplete hook which would have held the chord in place. The axis bar, spring and pin are missing. The head is an angular hump in profile and is decorated with a vertical rectangular cell with traces of light blue enamel. The cell continues down the bow to the approximate mid point which has a moulded section. This appears to be a worn chevron formed by lentoids. The lower portion of the bow tapers to a blunt broken point, and is undecorated. The bow is a D-shape in section.
The surface of the brooch has a matte light green patina.
The brooch measures 32.26mm long, 18.22 wide across the wings and weighs 6.59g.
The brooch is a Polden Hill type. Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands and suggest they date toAD 80 to 120. It is similar in style to WAW-6AA3CC and NMGW-8DF0B0.
