UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: WILT-B1A4EE

Object type certainty: Certain

A copper alloy unidentified object which is probably early medieval in date, c. AD 600-800. The object appears to be complete. The object may be a clothing or belt hook in the shape of a zoomorphic fish possibly in Oseberg style. The object has a curvilinear outline. At one end, there is a bifurcated tail with one half of the tail curving round with a hole in the centre, this hole was probably an attachment loop. The object continues to curve round and broadens out. There are three triangular and trapezoid shapes with incised lines following the curve of the lower edge. There is then two raised ribs of relief and the object contines to narrow and curl round so that the head is resting on the belly below the triangular and trapezoid decoration and facing back towards the tail. The narrow section leading to the head is decorated with two deeply incised lines following the curve of the neck. There are triangular sections on the neck and on either side of the head which are presumably fins. There is an ovoid hole beside the neck as it leads to the head. Where the head rests on the belly there are incised lines perpendicular to the triangular and trapezoid scaly decoration. On the back of the brooch, there is no decoration but behind the raised rib decoration there is a short hook which curves towards the body of the object.
