An incomplete and worn copper alloy object, probably a Roman Colchester one or two-piece type brooch, dating to the 1st century AD. The remains consist of a shallowly arched piece, circular in section at the centre thickening to a flat section below the bow at one end, probably the catchplate. At the other end it expands slightly in width before ending in an very worn, rounded break. The cross bar of the brooch is now missing, due to worn old breaks as such it is impossible to tell whether this is a one or two piece Colchester type.
The piece measures 46.10 mm long, 3.75mm wide (max), 1.68 mm thick (max) and weighs 1.43g
For a similar example see Bayley and Butcher (2004) Fig. 65 or fig 45. According to Bayley and Butcher (ibid, p.149) these brooches were first manufactured prior to the Roman conquest of Britain, but continued in use into the middle years of the 1st century.
