Roman gilt copper alloy plate brooch, complete apart from small pieces of the edge and the central (glass) boss. Mackreth 2011, British, Plate 3.b1. No stamped decoration is visible on the flat flange around the central cell, but some areas are obscured by an adherent brown concretion and a blue deposit (?azurite). A large amount of similar material lies at the base of the cell. On the reverse the pin appears to be in a closed position, but the pin and spring are largely obscured by the same hard brown material. Length and width 22.8 and 17.7mm. Late 2nd - 3rd century.
