An incomplete cast copper-alloy brooch of Late Iron Age or Early Roman date, c. 40-100 AD. The brooch corresponds to Mackreth's 'Durotrigan' type (Collingwood's obselete 'strip type'), itself of the first sub-type copying or derived from the continental Alesia/Aucissa series. The brooch consists of a sub-rectangular rolled head with an internal slot for the pin axis-bar, now missing. Below this, the sub-rectangular bow of the brooch arcs out, originally curving strongly in profile but now somewhat distorted and flattened as it tapers towards the catchplate and foot. The lower section of the bow along with the foot are missing in post-depositional damage. The outer face of the bow has been decorated with a central recessed 'flute' (with in-situ traces of red enamel), to either side of which is a raised strip displaying rocker-arm motifs. Preserved in fair condition, the brooch measures c. 49.99mm long, 13.31mm wide at its head, 8.01mm wide at the mid-point of the bow and 1.61mm thick at the mid-point of the bow. It weighs 3.38 grammes.
Close parallels are illustrated in Mackreth (2012, vol. II, plate 99, p. 102, nos. 6685, 6705 and 6736) which demonstrate similar central fluting on the bow. He suggests these are a short-lived type dated to after 45 AD (Mackreth 2012, vol. I, p. 1460) with a primarily south-western distribution. C.f broadly with SUR-97F865, also recorded on the PAS database.
