A rim sherd of a wheel-thrown ceramic Black Burnished Ware (Type BB2) jar of Roman date, circa AD 120 - 250. The fabric is dark blackish-grey in colour with a hard and gritty texture and black burnished outer surface. Abundant rounded quartz temper is present within the fabric. Ovate voids are also present.
The fragment is 54.9mm long, 26.1mm wide, 12.1mm thick and weighs 23.5g.
Overall diameter: 27cm (projected using rim chart); approx.7% remaining.
BB2 wares were produced at sites around the Thames estuary (Kent and Essex) and distributed in south-east England and in northern Britain during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
