Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A large wheel thrown sherd of coarseware kiln waste (91.2mm x 69.1mm; thickness: 12.2mm; weigth: 113.12g). This broken (including glaze on one of the breaks) sherd has mis-shapen and distorted during firing and have areas on one surface of bubbling/ blistering indicating very high temperatures. The sherd is poorly made with a reddish-grey fill with frequent large inclusions and small gaps. On the opposite side from the blistering surface, there is a distinctive ridge running across at a sligth curve, indicating where another vessel had been laid during the firing process. This vessel may have been used as a saggar (hard-fired cylindrical vessel) which would have been used to hold and encompass the more delicate material for firing.

This vessel dates from the late 16th - early 18th century (particularly the 17th century).
