A flint scraper, sub-oval in plan, semi-circular in profile and in section. Made on a primary flake removed from a beach pebble with cortex remaining on more than half the surface of the dorsal face. The very crude scraper edge was produced by the rapid removal of around 8 or 9 lateral flakes from the curved distal edge of the original flake. The resulting tool has an irregular edge with a large point at one point which may have also served as an awl or piercer. The original pebble was struck using a different stone without previously preparing a striking platform. The point of percussion is visible in the cortex at the proximal end of the flake. The bulb of percussion and at least two separate bulbar scars are clearly visible at the proximal end of the ventral surface.
The flint is of moderately fine texture. The visible surfaces are mottled grey and cream colour. The cortex of the pebble is of patches of grey and cream. It was clearly derived from a local beach pebble.
Notes:
Ref: Bond (2004) illustrates a similar, although less crude, example from Hockwold cum Wilton, Norfolk, on page 57, fig. 5.25 which he describes as a horseshoe scraper. On page 145, fig. 5.131, no.5, Bond illustrates a similar scraper with a pointed edge which is dated from the Beaker period.
