A flint end scraper from the Mesolithic period. This micro-scraper was made from the proximal end of a tertiary flake or blade. Sub-oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and triangular in section. The scars of two earlier longitudinal flakes remain on the dorsal face, resulting in a triangular section. Subsequently a single shorter longitudinal flake was removed from the proximal end of the dorsal face, followed by the removal of several small pressure flakes at the proximal end to produce a scraper edge. The retouch has removed the striking platform from the proximal end. A large pressure flake has been removed from the proximal tip of the ventral face. The conchoidal ripples on the ventral face are very clear. The distal end of the blade was broken off in antiquity. Both side margins show signs of wear and/or accidental damage.
The flint is coarse grained and its visible surface is mottled pale and slightly darker grey.
Bond (2004) illustrates several Mesolithic end scrapers on p.108, fig.5.92 nos.128 to 136. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar end scraper on p.107, fig.43 no.2.
