A retouched flint flake, sub-oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and in section. A tertiary flake, the dorsal face of which bears the scars of the removal of several earlier longitudinal flakes at the distal end. At the proximal end two smaller longitudinal flakes have been removed, which terminate in negative hinge fractures mid-way across the flake. Multiple small flakes have also been removed at the upper right margin of the flake. At the upper left margin of the dorsal face at least six shallow pressure flakes have been removed to create a cutting edge. All traces of the striking platform have been lost at the proximal end by the removal of two wide, shallow diagonal flakes from the ventral face, which originate from the upper side of its left margin. A number of smaller flakes have been removed from around the circumference of the ventral face, resulting in a thin cutting edge around margins of the flake. The resulting tool could have been used for various different purposes such as cutting or scraping.
The fine-textured flint is black and unpatinated, with no visible inclusions. The quality of the material suggests that it is derived from a flint nodule rather than from a beach pebble.
Butler (2005) on page 187 refers to the frequent occurrence of retouched flakes in Late Bronze Age assemblages. On page 186, fig.76.8 he illustrates a cutting flake and on page 184, fig.74.7 a side scraper, which both have similar characteristics to the present tool.
