A fragment of a copper alloy Medieval to post Medieval vessel, dating to the period c.AD 1100-1700. The fragment comprises the foot, which is broadly rectangular in plan with a worn break at its upper terminal. Three moulded longitudinal ribs are present on the front, one placed centrally, and one along each edge. The cross section mirrors the bulge of the ribs. The foot is curved in profile. A green-brown patina is on the surface, and sooting is present over much of the surface.
Cast cooking vessels seem to have been in use from c.AD 1100 until c.1850, when they were superseded by cast iron pots and saucepans designed for use on kitchen ranges (Butler, Green and Payne 2009, 1).
The vessel foot measures 45.81mm in length, 31.76mm in width, 5.45mm in thickness and weighs 29g.
