BROOCH

Unique ID: NMS-A13B64

Object type certainty: Certain

Incomplete copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative brooch of Mackreth's (2011) Type CD H. dating to the period c. AD 90 - 150. The pin, most of the bow, the foot and the catchplate are missing.

The head exhibits rolled cylindrical wings. There is a seam along the reverse of each wing. The wings house the copper alloy axis bar for the hinged pin mechansim. Only the butt of the pin survives housed within the recessed pin slot in the centre of the head. The wings are both decorated with a bead-and-reel design, with a diagonal moulding on either side of the bow at the junction with the head. The bow arches back from the head and is decorated with a single longitudinal sunken ridge. The bow terminates in a worn break. Traces of white metal coating survive on the wings.

A similar example is illustrated in Mackreth, D, 2011, Vol. II, p. 57, pl. 54, no.2641.
