A post-medieval cast copper alloy buckle. The buckle is S-shaped both sides have a zoomorphic moulded decoration on one end depicting what appears to be a swan head (although it could be a snake, there appears to be a beak and eyes which more closely resembles a bird). The other end tapers into a tail. Scale or feather-like decoration covers the 'body' of the buckle. Around it's neck is a circular attatchment loop.
S-shaped 'snake belt' buckles were most likely assoiated with sword belts in the 17th-18th centuries. Those, like this find, with more swan-like heads are considered to be slightly earlier, perhaps 16th-17th century.
