An incomplete Lead or Lead alloy Unifaced Token of the Late Medieval to Post Medieval period, dating to AD 1400 - AD 1800.

The token broadly oval (or tear drop shaped) in plan and rectangular in cross section. The top of the object comes to a rounded point, forming the tear drop shape. The obverse depicts a segmented design resembling a wheel, with six raised spokes crossing in the centre, with a thin border around the outside (Powell Type: 3). The reverse is plain and undecorated.

The token measures 18.5 mm in length and is 16.7 mm wide. It has a thickness of 2.7 mm and weighs 4.0 g.

The token is a mid to dark grey in colour with an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.

Lead tokens are a frequently occurring find, with a variety of different designs. Tokens like this, were used as tallies or as replacement low denomination coinage during the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. Other similar examples of this type of token can be found on the database, including WMID-0D8887, WMID-51064C and WMID-4E8481.
