An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy ansate brooch (c. 650-c. 800). Thorle Group II.
The pin is missing.
The plain flat head (13.9mm x 11.8mm x 2.0mm) is rectangular in plan with rounded corners. The bow is strongly arched in side profile and is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. At the top the bow has a width of 5.2mm, at the bottom the width is 5.4mm and the width at the centre is 4.9mm. The centre of the bow has a thickness of 4.0mm. It is unclear what shape the foot would have been as some material has been lost from the edges due to abrasion. A pierced pin-lug behind the head measures 10.0 mm in height, 8.0mm in width and c. 2.2mm in thickness. The catch-plate is incomplete as the curled-over part that secured the pin-tip is absent. The present measurements of the catch-plate are 10.0mm in height, 3.6mm in width and 1.9mm in thickness.
This brooch is reddish brown and pitted with traces of a dark brown patina. Iron staining is present at the rear.
