Unique ID: LON-9D28E5

Object type certainty: Certain

A Post Medieval bone needle or bodkin with a long rectangular eye and scoop-shaped terminal dating from the 17th century. A similar needle with scoop-shaped terminal is in Crummy (1988:28 fig. 1890). One end of the bodkin has a ear scoop shaped terminal. The bodkin has one long rectangular eye with two perforations above the eye and two below. The bodkin shaft tapers, but is now broken and missing its point.

Dimensions: length: 90.06mm; width: 5.94mm, weight: 1.99g.

Similar examples in metal on the database are BUC-816668, WMID-F16806 and BUC-816668. This is the first example recorded on the database in bone. The example published in Crummy (1988:28) is also in bone but only has one hole on either side of the rectangular eye.

Notes:

There is some debate over function with some being suggested as head dress pins or dress-pins whilst others are associated with needlework and lace making. The examples of bodkins with ear-scoops are one of the most common sub-types.
