An incomplete copper-alloy penannular brooch of late Roman to Early-Medieval date, c.AD 350 - 600. The brooch is of Fowler's (1960) Type E (after Booth, 2014) which has integral, forward facing zoomorphic terminals, which are solid cast, not folded back. The hoop is ovate and decorated with irregularly spaced bands of grooving. A continuous band of 15 grooves extends from the terminal after which four bands of three grooves are present.

The terminals are sub-rectangular including a 'snout' facing forwards with recessed circular 'eyes' behind. The reverse of the brooch is undecorated.

The metal has a mid-green patina and is in good condition. The brooch fragment is 47.7mm long, 7.3mm wide, 3.6mm thick and weighs 5.8g.

This brooch also has features in common with Fowlers Type F but these all have circular sectioned hoops whereas Type E has a wider variety of shapes.

Booth (2014; p.175) discusses the sections of hoops, stating that 'D-sectioned hoops are restricted to north-east England apart from an outlier at Minchin Hole, Glamorgan; rectangular and oval sectioned hoops only appear in the south and west'.

Type E in general is described as 'widely distributed from southern Britain as far as the Scottish islands, but focused on central and eastern England. A smaller cluster of sites producing more than one are located in the Severn Cotswolds region and a more dispersed group is found in Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and along Hadrian's Wall'.

The better dated brooches cluster around the late fourth and early fifth century AD. There is also a small group of sixth century date all from mortuary contexts (Booth: 2014; p.176).

Anna Booth comments that this example would best fit into her Type E/F, which is a transitional type.
