Lead possible vessel repair or pot mend, as kindly suggested by the finder. A cast waisted object, here interpreted as a plug for a small hole in a vessel wall of thickness c.13mm; patinated. If indeed a pot mend, the neat finish would commend a Roman date. However, this is a rather dainty piece to mend a hole in such a substantial vessel. An alternative identification as a knucklebone of similar date, for playing games of manual dexterity akin to Jacks, might be entertained. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.
