Copper alloy button. Plano-convex pressed metal composite uniform button, with a convex front with a broad rim, and a drawn wire loop passing into its back plate. The front bears a crowned monogram VR, with a circumferential Garter-style legend reading: ENGINEER VOLUNTEERS. The back bears an indistinct stamped maker's legend. The recruitment of specialist troops as volunteers arose from British anxiety at the resurgence of France under Louis Napoleon III, c.1848-1871, which also led to the construction of modern coastal fortifications from the Humber to the Solent. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1860.
