Treasure Case 2016 T806

Description: Post medieval silver dress fastener comprising the "female" component of the fitting. A moulded openwork plate comprising a symmetrical design made up of a series of foliate motifs with a cinquefoil on either side of the plate. At one end the plate tapers to a collared knop, at the other it exhibits a D-shaped loop.

Dimensions: Length: 29.9mm, width: 19mm, thickness: 1.9mm, weight: 2.5g.

Date: c. AD 1600 - 1700.

Discussion: No exact parallel for this object could be found, however, Read (2008, p. 181 - 182) discusses a number of broadly similar copper alloy examples which he assigns to the early post medieval period. The form of this example could potentially be slightly later, hence the date range proposed.

The object appears to consist of over 10% precious metal and be over 300 years old at the time of finding and as such qualifies as potential Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
