A silver Iron Age unit of the North Thames region / Catuvellauni, dating to the period c.20 BC-AD 10, 'Tasciovanos Crescent' type. Obverse: Upturned crescent, ring and dot below, beaded lines within, star above with ring, two pellets and single pellet symmetrically to each side, in exergue IA[...]. Reverse: Horse running right, crescent above, star(?) in ring in front, unclear motif below. As ABC, p. 129, no. 2613; BNJ, 2001: p. 180, no. 18.
Measurements: 14.59mm and 9mm thick and 1.23g in weight.
Discussion: This coin is the same type as ABC 2613, published in the Coin Register in 2001 (BNJ 2001: p. 180, no. 18; CCI-11495). It is noted that the first example parallels quarter staters of Tasciovanus or Andoco, with the crescent perhaps drawing on prototypes of Eppillus being otherwise unparalleld in style within the North Thames region. One of the difficulties with the first example lies in the majority of the legend(?) in exergue on the obverse is missing. However, the current example reveals more of the potential legend, perhaps reading IA[S?..], the final letter just visible but unclear. The I is possibly a letter T (but struck from worn or damaged dies?), the central letter A perhaps therefore supporting the identification with Tasciovanus. Although this is by no means certain, and indeed the initial letter looks convincingly like an I, the findspots of both coins in the Thames area points to a likely distribution within this landscape, making an association with Tasciovanus or one of his contemporaries highly likely.
