A complete cast copper-alloy religious pendant, dating to the 18th century (1700-1800 AD). The pendant is double-sided and broadly sub-triangular in form, with a small circular suspension loop protruding from its upper edge. The front face of the pendant depicts the flagellation column of Christ, with two crossed whips at its centre and the inscription 'COLVMNA XPI' at its base. The reverse side of the object depicts Jesus standing, hands bound behind back and wearing a loincloth. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina covering most of its surfaces, the pendant measures 29.48mm long, 10.49mm wide at its top, 6.27mm wide at its mid-point, 20.43mm wide at its base and 2.38mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 4.3 grammes.
Only one other example of this religious pendant can be found by the recorder (http://www.cruces-medallas.com/t11093-columna-de-la-flagelacion-de-jesus-mf043-r-pfv-columna-1) which is also dated broadly to the 18th century. Stylistically, they are likely to be of Italian extraction, and it has been suggested that they may be associated in some way with the Basilica of Saint Praxedes in Rome, which purports to posess a section of the column to which Christ was flogged and tortured prior to crucifixion.
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
