A fragment of copper-alloy late medieval or early post-medieval purse bar of Ward Perkins Type A2, dating to the period c. AD 1450 - 1550, consisting of a bar oval in cross-section with an old break at one end and a constriction at the other, with a rove or washer around the end (8.9mm in diameter). From one long edge of the bar is an attachment flange with two sewing holes, c.2mm in diameter.
The bar is divided into non-equal thirds by a two incised grooves. The middle third, which is the largest, contains two pairs of diagonal linear grooves in a 'V' formation inlaid with niello. The patina of the purse bar is light green. The fragment measures 58.7mm in length and 13.5mm in max.width (without the flange the bar is 9.3mm wide). It weighs 17.53g.
