An incomplete late Iron Age or early Roman Rosette brooch dating to the period AD c. 30-65. Probably Mackreth integral plate type or Hurstbourne Tarrant type (Mackreth D.F. 2011, pp. 28-29). The brooch is missing the pin and part of the lower bow and the foot. It measures 29.22mm in length, 20.36mm in width, 3.08mm thick and weighs 8.93g.
The head is composed of two short wings and open on the back with a C-shape profile. Inside the hollow wings is housed the Colchester-style spring mechanism from which extends the pin which is missing. From the centre of the wings, on the front of the brooch, projects the bow which is rectangular shape in plan and D-shape in cross section. Attached to the lower section of the head is a lozengeform plate. The bow is joined to the plate creating a semicircular opening with the latter.
The bow is decorated with three grooves and ridges running down through it. The junction point with the plate is not smooth but marked by a low ridge. The plate was possibly originally decorated but is now heavily corroded and damaged. The reverse is smooth and undecorated. Part of the catchplate projects from the back part of the plate but is incomplete.
A similar brooch is illustrated by Hattatt R. (2007), p. 308, no. 790.
