An incomplete cast copper-alloy brooch of Nauheim derivative/La Téne III type, dating to the late Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 1-100 AD. The brooch is of one-piece construction, with the integral pin-mechanism forming the head of the brooch. The latter is heavily distorted due to post-depositional damage, but originally would have formed two broadly symmetrical coils on each side of the upper bow, before looping behind the main body of the brooch and abruptly plunging downwards to form the pin, which itself apparently survives complete despite being badly damaged. From the upper body of the brooch, the main bow widens outwards steadily before abruptly tapering in again, giving the object a somewhat 'waisted' appearance. Just after the taper, the object abruptly truncates at the point where the propagation of the catchplate (twisted at ninety degrees to the bow itself) would have originally sat. The brooch largely undecorated, with the exception of a single central groove which runs down virtually the whole length of the bow and some transverse incisions on the tapering end just prior to the lower truncation. It measures 30.59mm long, 7.69mm wide at the mid-point of the bow, 8.22mm wide at the widest part of the bow, and 1.2mm thick at the mid-point of the bow, while weighing 2.4 grammes. The object is preserved in relatively good condition, with an even green patina covering most of its surfaces.

Similar brooches are illustrated by Mackreth in his publication (see Mackreth 2012, vol. II, plate 8, no. 3859) which he also assigns to the first century AD. He additionally notes that pieces of this type are particularly prevalent in West Sussex. Another virtually identical brooch to this example has also been recorded on the PAS database, see record SUSS-B92DAC.
