A copper alloy post medieval double loop buckle dating to c AD 1660-1720. The buckle is incomplete and has been damaged and squashed together with its plate. The remaining fragment comprises a semi-circular frame with a separate spindle which has been inserted through. It appears that the buckle was originally sub-annular but the second semi-circular part of the fram is incomplete. The frame is D-shaped in cross section and the sides of the frame are angled outwards towards the lower edge. There are the remnants of the plate or chape which comprises a single sheet of copper alloy folded over the spindle with a slot cut in the centre for the pin (which is missing). The upper edge of the plate is curved to about the size and shape of the buckle frame (this may have been the lower edge in use but is now framed by the buckle). The upper side (or possibly lower side in use) is heart shaped and terminates in the remnants of three stubs which may originally have been an anchor chape. There is a hole pierce through the centre of the heart shaped section the other side of the folded plate which presumably had a rivet which fixed the two parts of the plate together. There is evidence of gold plating over the buckle frame and the plate.

The buckle weighs 7.23g and measures 24.37mm in length, 29.42 in width and 7.82 in height.

Cf Whitehead, R, 2003, Buckles 1250-1800, Greenlight Publishing, Witham p 96 (for anchor chape no IV) and p 97 No 601 (for the frame and plate design).
