Copper alloy cosmetic mortar. Large cast mortar from a two-piece cosmetic grinding set. The object forms a shallow banana-shaped trough of maximum depth 1.8mm with a rounded terminal handle at one end; the other end is lost. The form is a slightly irregular curve which, given the thickness of the casting, is probably an original and intentional feature. The edges of the trough in which materials would be ground is markedly smoother and more highly polished than the base of the trough itself; the terminal is also glossed by handling wear. The published typology for these objects (Jackson 2010) indicates an end loop is likely to have been lost from the broken end, and that this is probably an example of Jackson's Type A. Suggested date: Late Iron Age to Early Roman, 100 BC-AD100.
