Treasure Case 2016 T748.

Description: Medieval or post medieval silver hinged mount. The object has at hinge at one end comprising two loops bent backwards which house the silver axis bar. The loops project from a rectangular plate decorated with an engraved border of zig zigs with three triangles also composed of engraved zig zags within. The plate then narrows into a devolved trefoil shape with bevelled edges. It exhibits two rivet holes, both of which retain cylindrical silver rivets which have been hammered at either end. On the reverse of the plate, just behind the hinge is an engraved X made up of zig zag lines.

Date: c. AD 1200 - 1600.

Dimensions: Length: 29.77mm, width 13.3mm, thickness (including rivets): 4.8mm, (not including rivets) 1.3mm, weight: 3.7g.

Discussion: Two similar objects, both described as hinged mounts have been reported through the Treasure Act and are dated to the medieval period. The decorative style of this example suggests a potentially later date, however, it is likely to be over 300 years old. See: BERK-E70F34 (2005 T336) & WMID-BCCFC6 (2009 T98).

The object appears to consist of over 10% precious metal and be over 300 years old at the time of finding and as such qualifies as potential Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
