A medieval gold Venetian ducat of Doge Francesco Foscari (1423-57), mint: Venice (Zecca). CNI 60-74 (probably 68). Ref: CNI vol.VII (Venice/Venezia), p. 131-3.
The coin is struck on an irregular flan (it is not clipped), fairly typical of this coinage. The imperfect punches used in the production of the coin are also consistent with other examples.
Obverse: FRAC FOSCARI DVX S M VENETI, S. Marco and Doge kneeling, together holding banner.
Reverse: SIT T XPE DAT Q TV REGIS ISTE DVCAT, Christ standing facing, raising right hand in benediction, Gospels in left, surrounded by mandorla containing nine stars
The reverse legend expands to Sit tibi, Christe, datus, quem tu regis, iste ducatus which translates "To thee, O'Christ, Duchy, which thou rulest, be dedicated.
The coin has been clipped.
