Silver coin. Worn flan of a probably hammered post-medieval coin; the mass would allow a threepence, with letters and devices stamped on one side: STEI [double-struck] and M.B, along with a floret with up to 16 narrow petals. No discernible trace of original obverse and reverse remains discernible, and the flan is creased and folded with the added lettering sited on areas standing proud on that side. The effect resembles that to be expected from siege money of the [first] English Civil War (1642-1649), and the letters M.B might be drawn from a coin die of that period - the flan was probably already old. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1550-1650; counter-stamping perhaps 1625-1649.
Diameter: 18.5mm, Weight: 1.12gms

Gainsborough was besieged and changed hands in the summer of 1643, with significant actions in the vicinity, and again changed hands in early 1644. Numerous lead shot reported from the general location of 'The Thonock Estate' may derive from action centred on the town, though these are regrettably no more closely provenanced. Hull also endured short sieges in 1642 and 1643, though collection of silver plate to pay troops there was only an expedient recorded in later years. Such events - or the passage of troops engaged in sieges elsewhere such as Newark on Trent, might explain this discovery.
