A copper alloy seal matrix of later medieval date (1250 - 1450 AD). The seal matrix is circular in plan with a rectangular cross section. The reverse face is plain and undecorated. It has a vertical rib which divides the reverse evenly into two parts - the upper part extends to form an attachment loop. The front face of the matrix depicts a central design around which is an inscription. The central design is complex and well cut - it comprises a square which has a lozenge of same size imposed over it to form a star. The central area of the strat has a desing which is unclear . The inscription is poorly preserved - the forms of the letters suggest a 14th century date. The inscription is unreadable and is enclosed by a circumferential line which respects the outer edge of the seal. The matrix is of a light-mid greencolour with an even patina.
The seal is 23.1mm in diameter, 3.3mm thick and weighs 5.48 grams.
This type of seal is dated to the fourteenth centuries, 1300-1400. Similar personal seals can be seen in the Medieval Catalogue of Salisbury Museum, these are all dated within this time period. There are also similar examples recorded on the database: eg. HESH-33DF18.
