Cast copper alloy leg and part of a foot from a cauldron, rectangular in plan, L-shaped in profile and lozenge-shaped in section. There is one central rib running vertically down the centre of the leg, from the broken upper edge to the top of the foot, where it starts to angle downwards towards the base. Most of the foot is missing and worn away with one projection which still has a layer of burnt material covering it, showing that it has not been broken since it was used. This 'toe' of the foot is not in the usual curved claw form but instead has a straight rectangular chamfer from the upper edge to the base, at about a 45 degree angle. The back of the base is curved and has pitted areas of damage. The sides of the leg are also curved from the narrower back to meet the wider, flat front of the leg. The leg is 16 mm thick and the base of the foot is 20 thick or deep. Much of the surface, apart from the sides, is covered in layers of black burnt organic material which would have happened when the cauldron was used for cooking by the fire.
Butler & Green (2003) illustrate similar cauldron legs with everted feet on page 139 & 166, figs.2 & 1, which are dated from the 15th to the 16th century.
Saunders (2012) illustrates similar leg and feet fragments with one central rib on page 81, fig.5, nos.10 & 11, which are dated from the 14th to the 15th century.
