~~Lead cloth seal comprising two circular discs that are joined by a central rivet that is integral to one disc and pierces the front face of the other, a rectangular connecting strip on one edge joins both discs together. On the obverse is a large crowned portcullis. The reverse is damaged which has removed any detail.
PAS record SUSS-C074D5 notes that: "The portcullis was the main design for alnage seals in the late Tudor period... and continued in use into the early seventeenth century" (Egan 1995:9)". Alnage seals indicated the cloth had been checked for quality by a Crown official and that the subsidy (tax) had been paid. Compare also IOW-5A65C5 and NMS-50AA24.
