FINGER RING

Unique ID: NMGW-3D934E

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

The reported object is a fragment of silver gilt 'fede' or devotional ring with a bezel in the form of a sacred heart, crowned by crossed fleur-de-lys, forming flanking heart-shapes. In other rings of this type, clasped hands may decorate the base of hoop. Maximum height 10mm; maximum width 13mm; weight 1.1g.

In terms of design and style of the iconography, the ring is of fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century date. A very similar bezel design with heart sprouting two flowers occurs on a silver gilt finger ring from Firle, East Sussex, dated to the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century (TAR 2004, no. 213). As on the Firle example, the Llancarfan bezel was cast separately and soldered onto the hoop.
