A complete copper alloy post medieval crotal bell dating to the 18th to mid 19th century.
The bell is complete, has a green-brown patina. and the iron pea survives. It has a spherical with a rectangular suspension loop at the top.In the top half of the sphere, a circular perforation is located either side of the loop. Around the circumference, there is a raised ridge. The lower half of the bell has a long straight opening ending in a circular perferation at each end, each just below the raised circumferential ridge. The upper half of the bell is plain. On either side of the long opening at the base of the bell is decorated. One side accomadates a sun burst design and the other side, a three legged cross. Surrounding the designs is a geometric pattern of oval shapes, spanning away from the sun burst and three legged cross.
Blunt ( 'Crotal Bells' page number 9) suggests that crotal bells that only have decorations on the lower hemispsheare tend to be of a later date (late 18th century to mid 19th century).
