FINGER RING

Unique ID: NMGW-26A732

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Decorative gold posy-ring. The hoop is of flattened D cross-section. The outer surface is engraved with a repeating vegetal pattern of stylized flowers and scrolls, on a blue enamel background. The inner face of the hoop is inscribed with the text: Forget not the gift, in italic script. There is an oval hall-mark, double struck and now indecipherable.

The internal hoop diameter 17 mm; maximum band width 2.5 mm; band thickness 0.8mm; weight 1.94g. The ring has not undergone any cleaning or conservation.

The style of the lettering, which closely resembles that on an enamelled posy ring from Henllys, Monmouthshire (Treasure Ref. No. 13.17) and the decoration indicate that the ring is of late 16th- or early 17th-century date. Other examples of enamelled posy rings have been found in the Vale of Glamorgan at Llantrithyd, Vale of Glamorgan (NMW ref. no. 04.3; TAR 2004, fig. 501), Lower Monkton Farm, Monknash (found in 1993, with white and blue enamel), St Donats, (with green and white enamel and small dark blue pellets; 05.3; TAR 2005-6, 405, no. 1238), and two from Old Beaupre (NMW ref. no. 03.19, TAR 2003, fig. 420 and one with opaque white and translucent green enamel; 04.13; TAR 2004, fig. 500).

Class: Posy
