An incomplete hooked openwork strap fitting, of the Early Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1550 to c. AD 1650.
The strap fitting consists of a trefoil plate with circular and lozenge shapped apertures, and a projecting bifurcate collar at the juncture of the plate and the rearward facing close butted blunt hook. The front edges are bevelled. The reverse is flat and undecorated. Rivet holes retain separate iron rivets. A separate copper alloy pendent ring would have been suspended in the hook, however this is now missing presumed lost in antiquity. The hook has also been broken and is incomplete.
The strap fitting measures 37.3 mm in length and us 15.5 mm wide. It has a thickness of 1.7 mm and weighs 2.4 g.
The strap fitting is a mid brown in colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.
Several similar strap fittings have been recorded on the PAS database including: WMID-1DFEB2; IOW-0A0576; HAMP-A13DC2; CORN-2F0ED5; SF-57F510; SF-5F17C6; IOW-1B6986, and WMID-F55813. A similar strap fitting has been published as no 828 in Read 2008, p 232.
