An incomplete Iron Age uninscribed British copper-alloy Thurrock potin of Class I type (c. 150 BC-c. 50 BC). Secondary Phase Potin, Flat Linear type.

Obverse: Head right

Reverse: Bull in angular 'stick' form butting left with two crescents above

Length: 18.1mm; width: 13.0mm. DA=12:9.

Hobbs 1996: 83, refs: 686-710.

This type of Iron Age coin was produced in present-day Kent, perhaps by an Iron Age tribe known as the Cantii. Coins of this type were common in Kent throughout the later 2nd and 1st century BC. Although these coins are uninscribed it is thought that the head shows the god Apollo as it was copied from earlier bronze coins made in the city of Massalia (modern Marseilles, France).
