A copper-alloy and lead mount from a Medieval to Post Medieval vessel, dating to the period c.AD 1400-1600. The mount is complete and in the form of a three dimensional male human head. The almond shaped eyes and the mouth are depicted by grooved lines, while the rounded nose protrudes from the face. The moulded scalloped hairstyle to either side gives the impression of waves, and the receeding hairline suggests an man of older years. The reverse exhibits a deep circular recess which would have been the attachment point to the vessel, and this reveals the lead inner. The flat reverse of the chin extends at a 45 degree angle from the back of the head and it is likely that this flat surface would have sat against the lip of the vessel. A green patina is on the copper-alloy surface, while the lead inside is cream in colour.
The vessel mount measures 26.32mm in length, 34.51mm in width, 31.59mm in thickness and weighs 138g.
Similar examples are found in Falke, O. and Meyer, E. (1988). Bronzegefaesse des Mittelalters. Bd 4 (Mittelalterliche Bronze- und Messinggefaesse). Berlin, p. 451-460, see especially p.499 no.593
