UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: LVPL-179296

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper alloy 'onion-shaped' knop of uncertain date. The object is oval in plan with a flattened top in the centre of which is a circular scar measuring 3mm in diameter. From the flattened top the object tapers in width towards the base which has a flat circular projection which appears to be incomplete and may have broken away from a larger object such as a brooch. This measures 3mm in diameter. The object is decorated with c.22 moulded ridges which run down the body of the object. The remains of gilding are visible between the ridges. The object has a mid-green patina.

The function of the object is uncertain however it is probably a decoration from a larger object, possibly a brooch. Similar brooch terminals are visible on penannular brooches illustrated in Hattatt, (2000), p339, no.110-1278.

Dimensions: 9mm in diameter, 7.5mm in height, 1.45g
