A sheet metal handle socket from a skimmer, used for skimming fat and removing items from cauldrons. The socket is constructed from two U shaped pieces of sheet metal riveted together. The flat lower sheet may have been part of the skimmer plate as itis now broken around the sides and inner end. This section has a few holes but these appear to be damage rather than the deliberate piercing that you would expect on the rest of the plate. The top sheet is raised in the centre forming a tapering convex semi-circular tube, now squashed at the outer edge, to accomodate a pointed wooden handle. This raised section is flanked by two rolled sheet rivets on each side. It has regularly spaced circular holes for draining. It is 44.1mm long, 35.9mm wide and 7.8mm thick, it weighs 12.97g.
Similar items are recorded in Margeson (1993: 118 - 119), fig. 84, numbers 744 and 745 which are dated to the 16th to 17th century and in Egan (1998:157) fig 126 where it is suggested the use of rolled sheet rivets suggest as date after c.1450 AD.
