An early medieval (early Saxon, c.AD450-550) copper-alloy gilded Saucer Brooch. The whole of the sloping rim is missing as is a portion of the circular central design. On the reverse are stubs of the hinge and catchplate. The brooch is decorated with a chip-carved geometric basketwork design with an outer and inner border of beadwork. Within the inner border is a large circular pellet.

Jo Ahmet comments: Tania Dickinson illustrates a similar one in 'Dickinson, T., 1993: 'Early Saxon saucer brooches: a preliminary overview', in W. Filmer‑Sankey (ed.), Anglo‑Saxon Studies in Archaeology and History, 6, 11-44 (Oxford University Committee for Archaeology, Oxford). Page 24 figure 31, from Long Wittenham I, grave 95 and describes the design as a basketwork version of the 'astragal' design.
